🔍 Problem Description
Test latch switch; adjust door alignment; replace latch assembly
📋 What You’ll Need
- Door latch assembly
- Multimeter
- Unplug the dishwasher from the wall outlet, or flip the dedicated circuit breaker to the OFF position at your electrical panel.
- Open the dishwasher door fully until it rests at approximately 45 degrees from the floor.
- Locate the door latch assembly on the right-hand side of the door opening, approximately 2 inches down from the top edge of the tub.
- Use a T20 Torx bit screwdriver to remove the 2 screws securing the latch assembly to the door frame (one screw at the top, one at the bottom of the assembly).
- Pull the latch assembly straight out toward you approximately 3 inches until you can access the wire harness on the back.
- Press the locking tab on the wire connector and pull the harness straight off the latch assembly, revealing a 6-wire connector with white, black, red, orange, blue, and brown wires.
- Set your digital multimeter to the Ohms (Ω) setting, specifically the 200-ohm range or continuity setting.
- Locate terminals 1 and 2 on the switch (marked on the back of the latch assembly, positioned on the left side when viewing from the back).
- Touch the multimeter’s black probe to terminal 1 and the red probe to terminal 2 while the latch is in the open (unlatched) position—you should read infinite resistance (OL or no continuity).
- Manually push the latch mechanism closed with your thumb until it clicks into the latched position.
- Maintain the closed position and check the multimeter reading—it should now display 0-2 ohms (or continuity beep).
- Release the latch and verify the reading returns to infinite resistance—this confirms the switch operates correctly; if readings don’t match these values, the latch assembly requires replacement (part number W10130694).
- Open the dishwasher door to a 45-degree angle and hold it in place with one hand.
- Locate the two door hinges at the bottom left and bottom right corners of the dishwasher tub opening, approximately 2 inches from each side edge.
- Examine each hinge for visible cracks, bent metal, or white calcium deposits that indicate water damage.
- Close the door completely and stand directly in front of the dishwasher at eye level with the control panel.
- Look at the gap between the door and the dishwasher frame along the top edge – this gap should measure 1/8 inch (3mm) uniformly across the entire width.
- Check the left and right side gaps, which should also measure 1/8 inch consistently from top to bottom on both sides.
- Open the door fully to 90 degrees and let it rest in this position without holding it – the door should stay open without swinging downward or feeling loose.
- Locate the two hinge adjustment screws on each hinge bracket, positioned inside the dishwasher cavity where the hinges attach to the tub sides.
- Use a T20 Torx bit to test if these 4 screws (2 per hinge) are tight by attempting to turn clockwise – they should resist turning.
- If gaps are uneven, loosen the hinge screws 2-3 full turns counterclockwise on the side that needs adjustment.
- Lift or lower the door corner while the screws are loose to achieve uniform gaps, then tighten screws to finger-tight plus 1/4 turn.
- Close and recheck all gaps with a ruler or measuring tape – you’ve achieved proper alignment when all gaps measure 1/8 inch and the door closes flush against the gasket without binding.
- Open the dishwasher door to 45 degrees (halfway open position) and hold it steady with your non-dominant hand.
- Locate the two door hinge adjustment screws on each side of the dishwasher cabinet, positioned approximately 2 inches down from the top edge of the opening where the door meets the tub.
- Insert a T20 Torx bit into your drill or screwdriver and place it into the right-side hinge adjustment screw.
- Loosen the screw by turning counterclockwise 2-3 full rotations—do not remove it completely. The door will now have lateral movement capability.
- Repeat step 4 on the left-side hinge adjustment screw.
- Close the door completely and examine the gap between the door and the dishwasher front panel on both sides. The gap should measure 1/8 inch uniformly on left and right sides.
- If the right side gap is larger than the left, push the bottom of the door gently toward the right while reopening to 45 degrees. If the left side gap is larger, push toward the left.
- While maintaining door position at 45 degrees, tighten the right-side hinge screw by turning clockwise until snug, then add 1/4 turn. Apply 15-18 inch-pounds of torque if using a torque screwdriver.
- Tighten the left-side hinge screw using the same method as step 8.
- Close the door and verify alignment by running your finger along the seal—you should feel no air gaps and the door should sit flush against the front panel.
- Check vertical alignment by observing the top edge of the door when closed. The door top should align perfectly with the countertop edge with no visible step up or down.
- If vertical adjustment is needed, locate the door spring tension adjustment screws at the bottom corners inside the cabinet (accessed with door open), 1 inch from each side edge, and turn both screws equally clockwise to raise or counterclockwise to lower the door position in 1/4-turn increments.
- Locate the door latch assembly on the right side of the dishwasher door opening, approximately 2 inches from the top edge of the tub frame.
- Examine the white plastic latch hook that extends from the door – press the door closed and observe if the hook engages smoothly with the latch striker on the tub frame.
- Open the door and inspect the latch striker (the metal catch plate mounted on the tub) for cracks, wear marks, or deformation – a functioning striker shows minimal wear and sits flush against the mounting surface.
- Check the latch spring mechanism by manually pressing the latch hook inward with your thumb – it should return to the extended position with firm resistance (approximately 2-3 pounds of force required).
- Inspect the micro switch assembly located directly behind the latch mechanism – you’ll see a small black rectangular component with 2 wire terminals (one white wire, one orange wire).
- Test the micro switch by pressing the latch hook while listening for an audible click – you should hear a distinct clicking sound at two points: halfway closed and fully closed (indicating the switch activates at both positions).
- Examine the door strike alignment by closing the door slowly and noting if the latch hook lines up centrally with the striker opening – misalignment of more than 1/8 inch indicates a door hinge problem.
- Look for white plastic shavings or dust around the latch hook area – this indicates excessive wear and the latch assembly requires replacement (part number W10619006).
- Check the wax motor assembly (cylindrical component 3 inches long, located behind the latch) for any visible cracks, leaking wax residue, or burn marks on the electrical connectors.
- Verify the latch release mechanism operates by pressing the door handle – the latch hook should retract fully into the door edge, flush with the door frame.
- Locate the door latch assembly on the right side edge of the dishwasher door, approximately 3 inches down from the top corner of the door frame.
- Open the dishwasher door fully to access the inner door panel.
- Remove the 6 Torx T20 screws securing the inner door panel around its perimeter—2 screws along the top edge, 2 along each side edge, and 2 along the bottom edge.
- Lift the inner door panel upward and away from the outer panel, separating it by approximately 2 inches to expose the latch assembly mounting area.
- Identify the latch assembly—a white or gray plastic housing measuring approximately 4 inches long by 2 inches wide, mounted to the right side of the door frame.
- Disconnect the wire harness from the latch assembly by pressing the release tab on the connector (located on the back of the latch housing) and pulling the connector straight out. The connector contains 6 wires in a single white plastic housing.
- Remove the 3 Torx T20 screws securing the latch assembly to the door frame—1 screw at the top, 1 in the middle, and 1 at the bottom of the mounting bracket.
- Pull the old latch assembly straight out from the door edge, sliding it through the rectangular opening in the door frame.
- Insert the new latch assembly (part number W10130694 or W11385675) through the same rectangular opening, aligning the 3 mounting holes with the screw holes in the door frame.
- Install the 3 Torx T20 screws and tighten until snug—approximately 8-10 inch-pounds of torque.
- Reconnect the 6-wire harness connector to the back of the new latch assembly by pushing firmly until you hear and feel a distinct click.
- Reposition the inner door panel onto the outer panel, aligning all edges flush.
- Reinstall the 6 Torx T20 screws around the door panel perimeter, tightening each to 8-10 inch-pounds.
